Peas Hold Firm Despite Rabi Seeding

PANAMA - Dec 21/18 - SNS -- Field pea markets maintained their firm tone through the past week despite unexpected progress seeding pulses in India during the current rabi season.

Despite complaints about below average rainfall through the middle of December, the calendar year is ending with good accumulations in several key pulse producing regions, resulting in record or near record week over week progress planting crops since the beginning of the month. The net result is plantings during the first three weeks of December have already set a record for the month of December.

If farmers plant another million hectares of pulses in the last week of December, the chance India will officially match last year's seeded area will grow. But, with such a large portion of the crop being sown late, weather conditions between January and March may be more critical in determining how much is actually produced.
