Lentils Maintain Firm Tone

PANAMA - Dec 14/18 - SNS -- International lentil markets maintained their firm tone through the past week, helped by ongoing demand from traditional buyers and reports of problems with crops in Argentina and parts of the Indian subcontinent.

Some millers in India and other parts of the Indian subcontinent import lentils as a substitute for tur or pigeon pea. Problems caused by heavy rains are being reported with crops in north east Karnataka while other regions are reporting increasing incidents of fusarium wilt.

The combination is expected to result in an upward trend in prices on India's domestic market for tur, which helps makes imported pulses more competitive. However, some traders in India think the government intends to impose quantitative restrictions on imports of all pulses in front of this year's national election.
