Peas Increasingly Optimistic

PANAMA - Dec 7/18 - SNS -- International field pea markets maintained their firm tone through the past week, helped by rising demand and a smaller than expected field pea harvest in Canada.

In its final crop report for 2018, Statistics Canada pegged this year's harvest at 3.58 million metric tons (MT), down 4% from its September forecast and 10% below the recent five year average of 3.963 million MT.

Saskatchewan regained its status as Canada's largest producer, with output reaching 1.78 million MT of all classes of peas, compared to 1.974 million last year, Output in Alberta dropped from 1.992 to 1.608 million MT. Production in other provinces was up over last year, rising from 146,900 to 193,700 MT.
