Chickpea Classes Diverge Further

PANAMA - Oct 26/18 - SNS -- International chickpea markets continued to be mixed, with kabuli type remaining weak while desi type have been strengthened by production problems in Australia.

This has seen grower bids in Australia soar in recent weeks, putting them at an effective premium to product grown in India. Interestingly, while seeding of this year's rabi season crops has started in India, farmers are emphasizing oilseeds.

Since seeding of the winter crop started in the middle of October, farmers have planted 1.46 million hectares, compared to 860,000 during the same period last year; while only 730,000 hectares of pulses have been planted so far, down from 2.417 million last year.
