Firmness In Birdseeds

PANAMA - Sep 28/18 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets finished the week on a generally firmer note despite weakness in oil type sunflower.

Canadian canaryseed and white proso millet closed on a firmer note, helped by delays finishing the harvest in Saskatchewan. The canaryseed harvest is only 36% complete, with 26% ready to straight combine, 3% in swath and 35% still standing. During the previous five years, the harvest averaged 38% complete by the end of the third week of September.

Canaryseed can take poor harvest weather better than most crops, with the result farmers often leave those fields until others have been combined. Long term weather forecasts see a return to sunny conditions, which will help fields dry and harvest resume.
