Third of U.S. Edible Beans Harvested

WASHINGTON - Sep 12/18 - SNS -- Roughly a third of this year's expected dry edible bean crop is now in the bin, judging from the latest weekly harvest progress reports from the USDA's state offices.

Crop reporters in Michigan say this year's crop continues to mature, but some fields began to get too wet, and more precipitation would have had a negative effects on overall plant health. About 95% of the state's crop is setting pods and 47% dropping leaves, compared to the recent five year average of 94% and 40% respectively.

Scattered rainfall in Minnesota limited field activities during the past week, but crop development continues ahead of the five-year averages.
