Markets Not Surprised by Statistics Canada

PANAMA - Aug 31/18 - SNS -- International field pea markets were not overly surprised by Statistics Canada's first production estimate of the year.

By the time its survey of farmers was completed, less than 2% of the crop had been harvested, but average yields were not significantly different from those reported by provincial agricultural departments by the time the harvest was three quarters complete.

Statistics Canada estimated yields at 2.217 pounds per seeded acre for a 3.635 million metric tons (MT) crop, down from last year's 4.112 million MT harvest. Provincial agriculture departments reckon yields are closer to 2,269 pounds for a 3.72 million MT crop.
