Record U.S. Dry Bean and Chickpea Harvest

WASHINGTON - Aug 10/18 - SNS -- This year's combined dry edible bean and chickpea harvest in the United States is expected to reach 35.9 million cwt (100 pound units) or 1.63 million metric tons (MT), according to the USDA first production estimate of the season.

If realized, production will exceed last year's record high. Planted area is estimated at 2.05 million acres, down 2% from 2017. Harvested area is forecast at 1.99 million acres, 1% below the previous year. The average United States yield is forecast at 1,809 pounds per acre, an increase of 28 pounds from last season.

Since 2016 the USDA has stopped reporting about dry edible seeded area or production in seven states which had been previously included. Production in those states could push past 54,000 MT, lifting this year's estimated harvest to 1.684 million MT, up from 1.677 million last year.
