Peas In Tense Mood

PANAMA - Jun 1/18 - SNS -- Field pea markets remain in a tense mood over concerns over hot and dry growing conditions in Australia and worries Canadian conditions could be similar in June and July.

Seeding of this year's North American field pea crops has made excellent progress because of generally hot and dry conditions across most growing areas. The week started with around 87% of the U.S. crop in the ground, down from 95% last year and below the recent five year average of 94% complete by the end of May.

Farmers in Saskatchewan made excellent progress planting crops after a slow start, with the result it is virtually complete in Saskatchewan. Progress moved ahead of last year, which had 95% of the crop in the ground by the end of May and above the recent five year average of 94% complete.
