Third Of U.S. Beans Planted

WASHINGTON - Aug 18/09 - SNS -- A third of this year's dry edible bean crop has now been planted, judging from states reporting progress to the USDA.

North Dakota is the most important producing region, with 28% of the crop now in the ground, compared to 36% at this time last year and the recent average of 23%.

Topsoil moisture supplies in the state rated 10% very short, 24% short, 63% adequate, and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 14% very short, 34% short, 50% adequate, and 2% surplus.
