Slow Start to Seeding Chickpeas

PANAMA - May 4/18 - SNS -- Chickpea markets finished the week little changed, with offers from exporters and processors remaining well balanced with the needs of buyers.

Prospective acreage increases in Canada and the United States are not having an impact on values because of early worries about prospects for a volatile weather market.

No progress seeding chickpeas was reported in Canada in April. But, with seeding delayed at least two weeks in most parts of the province, growers were unable to seed much of any crop last month.

Hot weather over the weekend has helped dry soils, but showers are forecast for later in the week, while temperatures are expected to be in the high teens for much of the coming week. Cooler days and showers could further delay planting progress in some areas.
