Pea Area in U.S. May Drop 20%

WASHINGTON - Mar 29/18 - SNS -- Dry edible pea area in the United States is expected to total 908,000 acres this year, down 20% from last year, according to the USDA's seeding intentions report for 2018.

Intended plantings are down in Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Washington, but unchanged from the previous year in Oregon.

Despite the decline in plantings, if realized, this will be the sixth highest planted area since records began in 1929.

This year's intended planted area for austrian winter peas is estimated at 19,000 acres, down 28% from 2017. Growers in Idaho, Montana, and Oregon anticipate decreased plantings from a year ago.
