Record Turkish Sunflower Crop

PANAMA - Mar 23/18 - SNS -- Turkey produced 1.55 million MT of sunflower from 700,000 hectares this season, according to a recent report by the U.S. agricultural attache for the country.

Oilseed sunflower seed area and production hit a record of 650,000 hectares and 1.45 million MT. While country-wide planting increased about 8%, production increased about 20% as result of favorable weather conditions in all regions during the season and improved seed quality. Turkey also produces about 100,000 MT of confection sunflower seed annually on 50,000 hectares.

Oilseed sunflower seed planting in 2018-19 is projected to be up marginally to 675,000 hectares and production about 1.48 million MT. Though there was country-wide precipitation during recent months, which caused higher sub soil moisture, the yields for winter and summer crops in Turkey are still dependent on the rains during the spring and summer.
