Bigger Than Expected Bean Area

PRETORIA - Feb 27/18 - SNS -- Dry edible bean seeded area and production prospects are better than initially expected, according to the first production estimate from the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

Initially, drought like conditions were said to have prevented farmers from planting beans and other crops in Free State and North West provinces.

However, farmers ended up planting 56,600 hectares of the 60,000 they had intended to seed. There was some recovery in seeded area for other crops, but the major summer crop, corn, was down sharply from what farmers hoped to seed, plunging from an intended 2.47 million hectares to 2.303 million.
