Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 25/18 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A very moist air mass of tropical origin extends over central and eastern Queensland, while a broad upper trough will persist over central and northern parts of the state throughout the forecast period. A surface trough in the far southwest of the state will move slightly further eastwards today with drier air and mostly fine conditions to its west. A new upper trough will sweep eastwards across far southern Queensland today, inducing a surface trough and southerly wind change to push north into the far southeast late in the day. This trough will extend further north along the east coast of Queensland into the middle of next week, with cooler and more stable air becoming established across much of the south of the state.
Forecast for the rest of MondayA moderate to high chance of showers and thunderstorms north and east of about Burketown to Longreach to Goondiwindi, with a high to very high chance over northern and eastern districts with some locally heavy falls possible in these thunderstorms. A fresh south to southeasterly wind change moving up from New South Wales will move into southern waters in the late afternoon or evening, possibly leading to some severe storms about the Gold Coast hinterland. Fine and mostly sunny over the west and southwest. Mostly moderate north to northeasterly winds, tending southeast to southwesterly in western Queensland.Tuesday 27 FebruaryA coastal trough and associated south to southeasterly wind change will move northwards along the southern coast into the Capricornia, while a ridge to the south of the trough will extend a drier, more stable air mass over southeast parts of the state in the wake of the trough. As a result thunderstorms should contract northwards out of the southeast with just a few showers possible about this part of the coast. Showers and thunderstorms will persist over northern districts and parts of the eastern interior, with some possibility of locally heavy falls with thunderstorms as a moist air mass remains in place. Fine and mostly sunny in western parts and other the southern interior.Wednesday 28 FebruaryA moist and unstable airmass is expected to persist over central and northern parts of Queensland, with showers and thunderstorms and some some locally heavy falls likely to continue. More stable southeasterly winds over the south should limit the weather to just a few showers along the coast, with fine conditions expected over parts of the southern inland. Temperatures are expected to remain near or slightly below average.Thursday 1 MarchMostly fine conditions are expected to continue over the southeast quarter of the state with just a few showers possible in the southeasterly, onshore flow. A moist and unstable airmass is expected to persist over the north Queensland, with showers and thunderstorms continuing, and some locally heavy falls remaining possible, particularly about the central and Herbert and Lower Burdekin coast and adjacent inland where the southeasterly surge encounters the very moist airmass. Temperatures are expected to remain near or slightly below average.Friday until SundayMostly fine conditions are expected to continue over the southeast with just a few showers possible in the southeasterly, onshore flow, and these more stable conditions are expected to gradually penetrate north and west into central Queensland. A moist and unstable airmass is expected to persist over northern Queensland during the outlook period, with showers and thunderstorms continuing. Some locally heavy falls remain possible, possibly becoming more widespread near the coast and nearby inland between about Cairns and Bowen where convergence around the southeasterly surge will be maximised. An increase in showers and thunderstorms may also spread into the far southwest ahead of a new surface trough moving into the area. Temperatures are expected to remain near or slightly below average. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Monday.Product IDQ10700
