MELBOURNE - Feb 20/18 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A significant upper-level trough over southern inland Queensland is expected to strengthen into an upper low over the southern interior today and should then move slowly northwards through the eastern and central inland from Wednesday through to the end of the week. A surface trough, which currently extends from the northwest of the state to the southern interior, will gradually shift westwards over the next few days and deepen as the upper-level trough develops over southern Queensland. These developments will result in large amounts of low-level moisture and instability over much of eastern and central Queensland during the week, particularly inland. A weak ridge along the southern Queensland coast will strengthen later today, gradually stabilising conditions in the far southeast of the state. Hot conditions will remain in place across the western half of the state today, before focusing more through the northwest on Wednesday. Cool conditions will develop under heavy cloud cover about central and eastern inland parts from Tuesday. Hazardous easterly swells about the southern beaches will continue to decrease today. Forecast for the rest of TuesdayRain areas and isolated storms with some heavy falls likely about the Maranoa, northern Darling Downs, western Wide Bay and Burnett and southeastern central interior, decreasing from the south during the afternoon. A high to very high chance of showers and thunderstorms about the remaining central and southern tropical interior with some severe storms and heavy falls likely. A medium to high chance of storms over the remaining tropics, more likely inland with possible locally heavy falls. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms over remaining areas east of a line from Urandangi to Windorah to Cameron Corner, more likely with possible damaging wind gusts over the Gulf Country, eastern Central West and Warrego districts. A medium to high chance of showers and patchy rain in the southeast with possible isolated storms. A hot day in the west. A cool day under cloud cover over the Maranoa and southeastern interior. Moderate to fresh and gusty northeast to northwesterly winds over much of the state, tending southeast to southwesterly over southwest parts of the state. Winds mostly moderate east to southeasterly over the far southeast.Fire Danger - Very High over western parts of the Maranoa and Warrego district.Wednesday 21 FebruaryThe upper trough and associated upper low is expected to move slowly north through inland Queensland, with a high to very high chance of showers and thunderstorms continuing across the central and northern interior, and extending towards the central coast district due to a coastal trough in the vicinity. Some heavy falls are possible about the tropics and northern parts of central districts, particularly inland. A cloudy day over the southern central districts and Wide Bay with patchy rain and showers and possible isolated storms. A medium chance of showers in the far southeast. A slight to medium chance of showers and thunderstorms over remaining areas north of about Roma to Windorah to Urandangi. Given the increasing cloud and southeasterly flow, temperatures are expected to become below average across southern and central districts, but remain above average in the northwest of the state.Thursday 22 FebruaryThe upper low will most likely move further north into the southern tropical interior, however there is some uncertainty to the strength and movement of the upper low at this stage. The high to very high chance of showers and storms should shift further north with the movement of the upper low, though a slight chance of showers and storms remains about southern inland districts. A medium to high chance of showers will be possible along the east coast in a moist, onshore wind flow, possibly further enhanced about the central to Fraser coast depending on the movement of a coastal trough over the Coral Sea. Temperatures will be cooler than average across most of the state.Friday 23 FebruaryThe movement and development of the upper low remains quite uncertain though it should start to rapidly weaken during the day as an upper trough amplifies over South Australia. The high to very high chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected about the Gulf Country and Peninsula districts near the upper low, with the possibility of locally heavy rainfall with thunderstorms. A high to very high chance of showers and possible isolated storms is also expected about the east coast and adjacent inland areas from Innisfail south to Fraser Island as a moist, onshore wind flow persists. A medium to high chance of showers and thunderstorms elsewhere north of a line from about Urandangi to Taroom to Gympie, with a slight chance of showers south of the line, increasing to a medium chance across the Southeast Coast district. Temperatures close to average, though daytime temperatures a touch below average over eastern, central and northern inland areas.Saturday until MondayA new upper trough over South Australia and a surface trough should move across southern Queensland during the weekend and Monday and combine with a moist, unstable air mass to generate a medium to high chance of showers and thunderstorms across much of the state's interior. A medium to high chance of showers is expected along the east coast as a high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge into eastern Queensland. As the troughs move northeastward the chances of showers and storms in adjacent inland areas increases about eastern districts during Sunday and Monday. The coastal component of the trough may move northwards during Monday, possibly extending fresh to strong winds into Fraser Island Coast waters by Monday evening, though note some uncertainty is associated with this movement. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Tuesday.Product IDQ10700 Notice Board MetEye extended into Queensland --> Twitter Media releases Severe Weather Update videos AskBOM videos Marketing Local Infomation Cairns weather Charleville Longreach weather Mackay weather Mount Isa Rockhampton weather Townsville weather Weipa Other Information Queensland - Local Forecast Areas Fire Weather Forecast Areas About Weather Forecast Services Marine Weather Knowledge Centre Severe Weather Knowledge Centre Warnings Water Climate Environment Tropical Cyclones Tsunami Warning Centre Agriculture - Water and the Land Marine & Ocean UV & Sun Protection Rainfall & River Conditions Graphical Views Radar Maps Rainfall Forecasts Seasonal Outlooks Climate Variability & Change Climate Data Online Seasonal Streamflow Forecasts Water Storage MetEye™ National Weather Services Aviation Weather Services Defence Services Space Weather Services Registered User Services Industry Solutions Supplier Entry Point Facebook Twitter Youtube Blog Google+ Careers Sitemap Feedback Freedom of Information Indigenous Weather Knowledge Glossary This page was created at 06:00 on Tuesday 20 February 2018 (UTC) © Copyright Commonwealth of Australia 2018, Bureau of Meteorology (ABN 92 637 533 532) | Disclaimer | Privacy | Accessibility
