Cooler Brown Mustard

PANAMA - Feb 16/18 - SNS -- Plant breeders in Denmark are hoping to develop varieties of brown mustard seed to compete directly with canola in vegetable oil and animal protein markets. They believe the plant has agronomic advantages over canola, such as improved heat, drought and disease resistance.

The project is several years from completion, but if successful, it will change the production potential for brown mustard and complicate marketing.

Brown mustard is mainly used as a condiment, where the bitter taste is valued. By changing the flavor and heat characteristics, exporters will need to market brown mustard on a strick varietal basis to condiment buyers.
