Problematic Chickpea Stocks

PANAMA - Jan 15/18 - SNS -- The USDA stocks in all positions report for December 1 indicates 39% of the chickpeas grown in the United States had disappeared by that time, the same percentage as last season.

The USDA also updated its production estimates for 2017 last week, pegging the chickpea harvest at 315,603 metric tons (MT) from 623,800 acres, up from just under 250,000 MT from 331,000 acres the previous year.

Inventories of large caliber chickpeas were pegged at 73,211 MT, compared to 65,409 last year; while small caliber chickpea stocks were thought total 45,768 MT, compared to 32,614 last year. Combined stocks came in at 118,978 MT, up just over 20,000 MT.
