WASHINGTON - Nov 9/17 - SNS -- Production of sugarbeets for the 2017 crop year is forecast at 36.0 million tons, down 2% from last year, according to the latest crop estimates from the USDA.
Producers expect to harvest 1.11 million acres, down 1% from last year. Yield is forecast at 32.4 tons per acre, a 0.3 ton decrease from last year.
Michigan's sugarbeet harvest was in full swing, although October rains impacted progress. The reported yields are below average, but the sugar content is above average. Harvest was nearly complete in both Montana and Wyoming. Harvest neared 90% completion in Nebraska and Colorado. Planting of California's crop was finishing up.
