Peas Firmer Against Crop Reports

PANAMA - Sep 2/17 - SNS -- North American field pea markets finished the week's trading on a firm note against confirmation of a steep drop in the size if the Canadian harvest and good opening season export movement.

Statistics Canada thinks this year's crop will come in around 3.79 million metric tons (MT), down from almost 4.84 million last year. Production was not broken down by class, but the 85% of the Canadian crop will likely be yellow peas, 14% green and the remainder classes such as marrowfat and maple.

It is important to note that the Statistics Canada survey of farmers was done before the harvest started. During the last half of July, growers in Saskatchewan thought yields would average 1,791 pounds per seeded acre, compared to 2,333 in Alberta and 2,215 pounds in Manitoba.
