Sharp Drop in Mustard Output
PANAMA - Sep 1/17 - SNS -- Mustard seed production in Canada will be sharply lower this because of reduced area and a sharp decline in average yields, according to Statistics Canada's preliminary production estimate.
Based on grower responses during the last half of July, yields were pegged at 898 pounds per acre in Alberta and 646 pounds in Saskatchewan for a combined harvest of 129,500 metric tons (MT), down from 235,600 last year.
However, crop reporters in the two provinces indicate yields will be better than forecast, with Saskatchewan Agriculture estimating that with 42% of the crop now in the bin, they will average 753 pounds per acre. Alberta does not estimate mustard seed yields, but trends for other crops suggest they could be below the official estimate at around 844 pounds per acre.
