India Restricts More Pulse Imports

NEW DELHI - Aug 21/17 - SNS -- India added moong beans and urad or black mapte to the list of commodities for which imports are restricted.

With the change, 300,000 metric tons (MT) will be allowed to be imported during the 2017-18 fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2018. Earlier, the government imposed a 200,000 MT import quota on pigeon peas.

All the quotas are retroactive to April 1, with the result they have already been filled. This does not affect cargoes already enroute to India. But, exporters will not be able to ship outstanding sales.

The decisions come in the wake of rising estimates of pulse production across the 2016-17 production cycle.

In its latest production estimate, output for all pulses was pegged at 22.95 million metric tons (MT). Last summer's monsoon or kharif crop ended up at 9.43 million MT, while this year's rabi season crop is thought to total 13.52 million MT. This is up from 5.53 and 10.82 million MT respectively in 2015-16.
