Wide Range in Yields As Harvest Starts

REGINA - Aug 3/17 - SNS -- This year's harvest is underway in Saskatchewan with farmers saying yield prospects occupy a wide range across the province.

In its latest crop progress report, Saskatchewan Agriculture said less than 1% of the provincial crop has been combined, while slightly more than 1% is ready to straight-cut. Roughly 47% of the fall rye, 6% of the winter wheat, 2% of the lentils and 1% of the field peas are now in the bin.

The provincial agriculture department added that many pulse crops in southern and central areas are being desiccated. Reported yields so far range from average to well below average, depending on field and moisture conditions.
