U.S. Bean Condition Slips

WASHINGTON - Jul 25/17 - SNS -- Almost 45% of the U.S. dry edible bean crop is in fair to very poor condition as a result of recent hot and dry weather in key growing areas.

Deterioration of North Dakota crops was limited during the past week as much needed rainfall was received. The amount of moisture received ranged from a quarter of an inch to two inches.

However, much more is needed to help crop development. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 31% very short, 36% short, 32% adequate, and 1% surplus. Dry edible beans blooming was 75%, near 71% last year, and ahead of 66% average.

Hot and dry conditions across much of Colorado continued to advance crop development. Some areas received needed moisture, while others remained very dry. In northwestern counties, a reported a lack of rain and hot daytime temperatures have driven irrigation water supplies to critically low levels; stream flow has been adversely affected as well as pond levels. About 35% of the state's dry edible bean crop is flowering, down from 60% at this time last year and the recent average of 48%.
