Pea Demand Optimism Hit

PANAMA - Jul 8/17 - SNS -- Canadian field pea markets finished the week's trading with less optimism about business prospects in India following news about the country's fumigation exemptions.

Unlike the United States and France, Canadian cargo does not need to be fumigated at origin if the bill of lading is dated on or before September 30, 2017. All cargoes from the other two countries can be fumigated on arrival in India if the bills of lading are dated on or before December 31, 2017.

This increases the cost of shipping Canadian pulses to India, whether because they are fumigated at origin or because importers must pay a penalty if they are fumigated on arrival in India.
