Green Lentil Views Differ

PANAMA - Jul 20/17 - SNS -- Lentil growers in Canada and the United States had very different experiences with markets during the past season, something reflected in their decisions about how much to plant.

Land in lentils increased from 933,000 to 1.015 million acres in the United States, while dropping from 5.86 to 4.4 million acres in Canada. Lentil production in the U.S. is mainly green, while red lentils are the dominant class grown in Canada.

Despite relatively strong weighted average prices for green lentils versus other crops, Canadian growers were discouraged by wide, quality based price variations within the No 2 grade fraction; increased disease pressure; and competition for land use from soybeans.
