Net Decline in Potato Area

WASHINGTON - Jun 30/17 - SNS -- land in potatoes during the summer and fall periods will expereince a net decline, according to the USDA's seeded area estimates for 2017.

Growers planted an estimated 63,600 acres of summer potatoes in 2017, up 2% from 2016. Harvested area is forecast at 61,100 acres, 1% above 2016.

Growers planted an estimated 907,800 acres of fall potatoes, down 1% from 2016. Harvested area is forecast at 901,400 acres, slightly above 2016.

Some flooding and cool weather occurred earlier in the spring in Idaho, which caused delays in planting progress and forced farmers to work overtime in May to catch up. As of June 4, ninety-eight% of the crop was planted with 65% emerged, behind the 5-year average of 100% planted and 67% emerged. Cool, wet weather also delayed planting progress in Washington where only 77% of the crop had emerged, behind the 5-year average of 94%.
