India Boosts MSPs 7% to 8%

PANAMA - Jun 21/17 - SNS -- This year's increases in India's minimum support prices (MSP) have been shrouded in secrecy since they were set by the country's cabinet on June 7.

Ongoing protests by farmers in several states over weak markets, rising input costs and debt relief were cited in media accounts as reasons for the delay.

In the past week, some states started releasing details about MSP levels for this summer's monsoon or kharif season crops, perhaps in an effort to show farmers the government is serious about its promise to double farmer incomes within five years.
