Seeding Will Slow Without Warm Weather

REGINA - May 18/17 - SNS -- Saskatchewan farmers make good progress seeding crops during the past week despite cool and wet weather, and heavy rainfall in some areas. However, without warm weather, seeding progress could slow.

The provincial agriculture department says 30% of the 2017 crop is now in the ground, just behind the recent five year average of 33% sown by the middle of May.

Seeding is most advanced in the southeast, where producers have 60% of the crop in the ground;compared to 46% in the southwest; 19% in the east-central region; 16% in the west-central region; 8% in the northwest and 4% in the northeast.

Fields and roads in some regions remain wet and are unable to support equipment. Warm and dry weather is needed for most producers, while others in more southern regions need rain to help crops germinate and emerge.
