Seeding Almost General in Saskatchewan

REGINA - May 12/17 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's pulse and specialty crops is becoming general in Saskatchewan, judging from the latest crop report from the provincial agriculture department.

Seeding of all crops is now considered 11% complete, behind the recent five-year average of 16% sown by the end of the first week of May.

Seeding is most advanced in the southeast, where producers have 30% of the crop in the ground. Eighteen% is seeded in the southwest; three% in the west-central region; two% in the northwestern and east-central regions and one% in the northeast.

Although recent warm weather has allowed some producers to complete field work such as seeding, herbicide application and harvest, significant rainfall in many regions earlier this week will delay progress. Warm and dry weather will be needed to help fields dry before field work can continue.

Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 26% surplus, 71% adequate and 3% short.
