Near Average Seeding Progress

WASHINGTON - May 9/17 - SNS -- Seedings of this year's field pea crops are close to average in the United States despite delays in the Pacific Northwest.

Around 84% of this year's crop will be sown in Montana and North Dakota, where farmers have planted 70% and 50% respectively of this year's intended area. Though down from last year, it is at or above the respective five-year averages of 70% and 39%.

Crop reporters in North Dakota say 10% of this year's crop has emerged, compared to 20% last year and the recent average of 12%. In Montana, 30% of the crop has emerged, up from 28% at this time last year and the recent average of 13%.

Weather in Montana alternated between "hot and sunny" and "cool and wet" during the past week. Soil moisture conditions are well above both last year and the 5-year average with 88% of topsoil and 92% of subsoil rated adequate to surplus.
