Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 24/17 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A weak high pressure system in the Tasman Sea will drift slowly eastwards over the next few days and weaken further, with the ridge along eastern Queensland weakening as a result. A moist and unstable airmass will remain over the far north of Cape York Peninsula and over Torres Strait for the next few days. An upper trough and associated surface trough will enter southwestern Queensland later today and shift north and east across western and southern districts on Wednesday. A firm ridge and a cool, dry air mass will then extend into much of the state on Thursday and Friday in the wake of the surface trough.
Forecast for the rest of TuesdayA high chance of showers and isolated storms with possibly locally heavy falls over far northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. A slight to medium chance of showers and possible storms over the southwest and southern interior, increasing to a medium to high chance of showers, possible storms and some light patchy rain near the New South Wales border west of Goondiwindi. The slight chance of showers about the exposed east coast, increasing to a medium to high chance north of Townsville. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Some morning fog patches are expected about the east coast and adjacent inland south of about Townsville. Mostly moderate southeast to northeasterly winds about eastern parts, fresh and gusty at times over the north. Winds tending moderate northeast to northwesterly about the interior, fresh and gusty at times during the day, before shifting moderate to fresh and gusty southwesterly over southwestern parts during the day.Wednesday 26 AprilA medium to high chance of showers and storms over the northern Peninsula district. The trough system in the southwest of the state will sweep north and east through western, southern and central districts, generating some showers or patchy rain and possible isolated storms with its passage. The trough will most likely shift off the southern coast late in the evening. A large high pressure system over the Great Australian Bight will then extend a firm ridge throughout much of the state in the wake of the trough with fine and mostly sunny conditions spreading to western Queensland.Thursday 27 AprilThe showers and storms over the northern Peninsula district should start to contract northwards as a drier air mass extends northwards. The chance of some light showers about parts of the east coast in the early morning as the surface trough shifts offshore. In the wake of the trough, the large high pressure system over the Great Australian Bight will push a dry, cool air mass into much of the state, with fine and cooler conditions for most areas.Friday 28 AprilThe chance of some showers about the northeast coast, more likely about the north tropical coast. Fine and mostly sunny for the remainder of the state, with cool to cold conditions expected. Some light frost patches are possible about the southern Darling Downs and Granite Belt, as well as about parts of the central interior.Saturday until MondayThe large high pressure system over the Great Australian Bight should maintain the cool dry conditions over much of the state through the outlook period, with fine conditions and cooler conditions for most areas, although some showers will persist about parts of the exposed east coast, more likely on Monday as the flow becomes a little more onshore. Frosts may develop about parts of southern interior on Saturday morning, becoming less likely by Sunday morning. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Tuesday.Product IDQ10700
