Lentils Subject to 10% Duty

NEW DELHI - Mar 29/17 - SNS -- Customs agents in India say that effective immediately, both tur (pigeon pea) and lentils are subject to a 10% import duty based on the HS-code (0713 40 00) used in the ministry order.

The duty applies to tur and lentils shipped from countries which are not full members of the ASEAN trading bloc. To qualify for the 0% duty rate, lentils and tur shipped from ASEAN members states must include an approved certificate of origin.

No changes were made to import duties for chickpeas, field peas, or other classes of dry edible beans. Those remain at zero. However, the change underscores the willingness of the Indian government to discourage imports in the belief this will provide price support to farmers.
