India Expected Extend MBR Exemption

NEW DELHI - Mar 23/17 - SNS -- India's agriculture ministry is expected to grant another exemption allowing countries like Canada to ship pulses without first fumigating them with methyl bromide.

Officials stressed the extension would be short and that countries will need to fumigate all pulses shipments at time of shipment. However, India says it is working with other governments to find an effective alternative to methyl bromide.

Interestingly, India says that in January, its plant quarantine department told agricultural counselors and trade commissioners from other countries that the current exemption would not be extended.

In recent weeks, India's government came under intense pressure from pulse traders in its country and other governments to grant another extension.
