Turkish Demand May Climb

PANAMA - Mar 18/17 - SNS -- International chickpea markets maintained their firm tone through the past week, helped by prospects of a short term boost in exports to Turkey.

That country dropped its 19.3% import duty on chickpeas until July 1 in an effort to tame domestic price inflation for the commodity.

The U.S. agricultural attache for the country says local media reports that chickpeas prices have doubled in a year on domestic markets, forced the government to reduce the import duty. Low yields, increasing international prices, depreciation of the Turkish Lira are some reasons behind the high prices.
