Pea Market Uncertainty Remains

PANAMA - Mar 5/17 - SNS -- Field pea markets remain uncertain about the future of India's decade old exemption allowing countries such as Canada and Australia to ship pulses without fumigating them with methyl bromide.

The current exemption expires on March 31. By week's end, some government officials in India were suggesting Canada might be granted a final, temporary extension.

They were adamant that Canada needs to fumigate pulses at time of shipment. If methyl bromide cannot be used, they said the Canadian government will have to provide evidence that an alternative product is equally effective.

While relieved, markets worry that India might set a time line which Canada cannot meet, suggesting that unless any extension to the exemption is less than year, there is a significant risk of trade disruptions during the 2017-18 marketing campaign.
