MELBOURNE - Feb 24/17 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation An upper trough over southwestern Queensland will shift to the northeast while a more significant upper feature begins to amplify over New South Wales on Saturday. The strong system will move into southeast Queensland on Sunday before becoming slow moving and strengthening early next week. A weak surface trough lies over the west of the state and will move into the central interior over the weekend before shifting westwards again early next week. A belt of high pressure extends across southern Australia and will maintain ridging over the east coast during the coming days. Forecast for the rest of FridayA high to very high chance of showers and thunderstorms over the Peninsula and North Tropical Coast and Tablelands districts. The medium to high chance of showers and thunderstorms over remaining areas of the northern tropics. A slight to medium chance of showers about the remaining east coast north of about Yeppoon. Mostly clear elsewhere with only the slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm about the Granite Belt. Light to moderate east to southeasterly winds, fresh and gusty south to southeasterly in the west.Saturday 25 FebruaryA high to very high chance of showers and thunderstorms over the Peninsula and North Tropical Coast and Tablelands districts. The medium to high chance of showers and possible thunderstorms over remaining areas of the northern tropics. A slight to medium chance of showers about the remaining east coast, mostly north of about Gladstone. Slight to medium chance of showers and possible thunderstorms in the southern interior. Mostly sunny elsewhere. Light to moderate southeast to northeasterly winds, fresh and gusty south to southeasterly in the west.Fire Danger - Very High in the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Maranoa and Warrego, and Wide Bay and Burnett districts.Sunday 26 FebruaryA new upper trough will amplify over southeastern Queensland. The surface trough will remain slow moving over the interior while the ridge of high pressure will strengthen along the east coast. A medium to high chance of showers and storms near the surface trough east of about Quilpie, with the chance of thunderstorms decreasing near the coast. A medium to high chance of showers and storms exists once more in the northern tropics and Gulf Country, more likely about the northern Peninsula, but with mostly fine conditions expected in parts of the northern interior. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms through inland parts elsewhere. A mostly high chance of showers about the east coast, with possible storms about the North Tropical Coast.Monday 27 FebruaryThe upper trough will remain slow moving over the southeast quarter of the state, while the surface trough will move into western Queensland in response to the strengthening ridge. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms across much of the interior of the state. The northern tropics will remain active, with a high to very high chance of showers and storms about the Peninsula. A high chance of showers about the entire eastern coast of Queensland in the moist onshore wind regime. Fine and sunny in the far southwest of the state.Tuesday 28 FebruaryThe upper trough will remain strong and slow moving over the southeast quarter of the state, while the surface trough will shift into the far west of the state as the ridge strengthens. A slight to medium chance of showers and storms across much of the interior of the state. The northern tropics will remain active, with a high to very high chance of showers and storms about the Peninsula. A high chance of showers about the entire eastern coast of Queensland in the moist onshore wind regime with possible storms about the tropical east. Fine and sunny in the far southwest of the state.Wednesday until FridayA high in the Tasman Sea will maintain a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast with showers persisting in an onshore wind flow. Showers and storms will continue over the north of the state through the outlook period.
