India's Pulse Area Tops 30 Million Hectares

PANAMA - Jan 22/17 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's rabi season pulse crops is drawing to a close in India, though farmers continue to make above average weekly progress.

Total area now stands at 15.77 million hectares, compared to just 14.1 million last year and the recent five year average of 14.62 million. Area is up over last year in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh; but down in Karnataka, Haryana, Assam and Gujarat.

Total area is just shy of the record 16.19 million sown during the 2013-14 campaign. Even so, combined land in pulses for this season's kharif and rabi planting seasons has already set a new annual record, pushing past 30 million hectares. The previous record was set last season, when area topped 23 million hectares.
