Busy Start to U.S. Chickpea Season

PANAMA - Jan 16/17 - SNS -- Processors and exporters in the United States have been unusually busy since this year's harvest got underway.

Production ended up at a record 247,047 metric tons (MT) of all classes of chickpeas, according to the USDA's final crop report for 2016, more than double the 115,350 MT grown in 2015.

Breaking down output by type, the USDA said production of 8mm and larger chickpeas jumped from 72,896 to 159,167 MT; while output of smaller chickpeas went from 42,457 to 87,907 MT.
