61% of Lentils No 2 or Better

WINNIPEG - Dec 14/16 - SNS -- The Canadian Grain Commission's (CGC) voluntary submitted sample program for farmers suggests over 61% of this lentil crop might have fallen into the top two grade fractions.

Of the 680 samples sent to the CGC since the start of Canada's 2016-17 marketing year, 25.7% have graded No 1 Canada; 35.5% No 2 Canada; 27% Extra 3 Canada; and 11.6% No 3 Canada.

The program is voluntary and the grade spreads is at odds with the experiences reported by some lentil shippers. However, the results from the voluntary program are consistent with the experience of Canada's bulk lentil shippers. Of all bulk lentils loaded to vessels between August 1 and December 4, 71% were No 2 Canada, 10% No 3, and 20% other grades.

The average protein content of the lentil crop is 27%, compared to 25.9% last year. Protein levels in samples submitted by farmers range from 21.7% to 30.4%

Field pea producers also participate in the program. Of the 551 samples they submitted: 27.2% graded No 1 Canada; 48.3% No 2 Canada; and 24.5% No 3 Canada.

The samples also reveal massive differences in protein content from one sample to another. The average protein content of the field pea crop is 22.1%, ranging from a low of 14.2% to a high of 28.1%.
