Record Desi Chickpea Crops
PANAMA - Dec 10/16 - SNS -- Chickpea markets finished the week's trading on a mixed note, with Australian desi chickpeas offering more competition to small caliber kabuli chickpeas in the Indian subcontinent.
Australian production was pegged at a record 1.23 million metric tons (MT) as the week got underway, up from 1.01 million last year and 690,407 in 2014.
Though the official estimate is lower than industry expectations, it offers no relief to exporters and growers. Marketing the crop will face more challenges than expected during seeding.
