Lentils Maintain Firm Tone

PANAMA - Nov 27/16 - SNS -- International lentil markets finished the week's trading on a firm note, helped by indications Canada's harvest might be smaller than initially forecast.

Statistics Canada will issue its final production estimate on December 6, based on a survey of farmers after the harvest was at least 97% complete. According to Saskatchewan Agriculture's final crop progress report of the season, farmers were able to harvest all but 2% of the crop. The last time the harvest was not completed was in 2002, when 5% of the crop was left in fields.

Difficult growing and harvest conditions had an impact on average yields, believes Saskatchewan Agriculture. Reports from crop reporters suggest farmers only harvested 1,155 pounds per acre, down 6.2% from Statistics Canada's September forecast and down 3% from last year's 1,190 pound average.
