U.S. Harvested 564,00 MT Lentils

WASHINGTON - Nov 9/16 - SNS -- This year's lentil harvest jumped 136% over last year to 12.4 million cwt (100 pound units) or 564,093 metric tons (MT), according to the USDA.

Planted area, at 935,000 acres, is up 90% from a year ago, while harvested acreage, at 917,000 acres, is up 93% from 2015. If left unchanged in the USDA's final crop report for the year, planted and harvested area will be record highs in Montana, North Dakota, and the United States.

Average yield is expected to be 1,356 pounds per acre, up 248 pounds from 2015. If realized, Idaho's yield will be a record high.

In Montana, the crop was 94% planted by May 29 and reached 97% emergence by June 12. Harvest began in mid-July and was 95% complete by September 11. In North Dakota, harvest began in early August and was complete by the last week of September, approximately equal to the previous year.
