Slow Mustard Movement and Harvest

PANAMA - Oct 14/16 - SNS -- Bulk export movement of mustard seed maintained its slow pace through the first week of October, reflecting limited deliveries of new crop product.

This year's harvest is now over 78% complete, compared to 96% last year and the recent five-year average of 97.4% complete. This suggests around 178,000 metric tons (MT) of new crop was available, compared to 115,000 MT at the same time last year.

Markets are somewhat concerned about the remaining fields of mustard seed because of cold and damp conditions. The past week saw rain turn to snow and temperatures fall below zero most nights. Any seeds were still maturing will be harvested green, suggesting late harvested mustard seed could present some quality challenges to processors.
