Green Lentil Quality An Issue

PANAMA - Oct 14/16 - SNS -- Green lentil markets were unimpressed with quantity data provided by the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) during the past week.

Though the data combined reds and greens, some market participants approached the data as if it represented the quality situation for green lentils. This is a mistake given the fact that this year's red lentil crop is acknowledged to be of higher average quality than the green.

Quality issues in green lentils are reflected in prices, creating a situation where buyers need to be clear about quality needs, especially with respect to size and uniformity in shipments. There are reports of large green lentils being graded as No 2 Canada even though the contain 50% or more undersized kernels.
