Modest Gain in Chickpea Harvest

PANAMA - Oct 2/16 - SNS -- In its latest monthly review of Canadian chickpeas Agriculture Canada's market analysis branch in Winnipeg predicts chickpea production this year will total 114,000 MT from 69,000 hectares, compared to 90,000 MT from 50,000 hectares last year.

Agriculture Canada forecasts exports will reach 70,000 MT in 2016-17, compared to an estimated 151,000 MT last season. Domestic use is forecast at 62,000 MT in the coming marketing year, versus 63,000 last season.

Season ending stocks were forecast at 15,000 MT for the 2015-16 marketing year, versus 125,000 the previous season. Agriculture Canada thinks the coming marketing year could finish with 5,000 MT of chickpeas on hand.

Agriculture Canada said the average grower bid for all classes of chickpeas was $815 MT in 2015-16. It thinks the season average bid will range between $790 and $820 MT in 2016-17.
