MELBOURNE - Sep 29/16 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A weak ridge of high pressure extends from a high over the southern Coral Sea to the northern tropical coast. An upper trough is maintaining a cloud band over central and southern Queensland and will shift eastwards tonight and off much of the east coast early on Friday. A cold front associated with the upper trough will also move eastwards through eastern Queensland tonight, reaching the Coral Sea as far north as about Cardwell early Friday morning. The next upper trough will approach southwestern Queensland late Sunday. Forecast for the rest of ThursdayA high chance of showers and rain areas with possible gusty thunderstorms over the southeast and central parts of the state, clearing from the west. A medium to high chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms about northern Queensland. Fine and mostly clear in the southwest. Moderate to fresh southwest to northwesterly winds over the interior. Mostly moderate northeast to northwesterly winds in the east, tending fresh to strong later in the southeast.Friday 30 SeptemberA medium to high chance of showers and thunderstorms over coastal districts in the south and central parts, clearing during the early morning. A medium chance of showers and possible thunderstorms over the northern parts of the state. Fine and sunny elsewhere. Temperatures will be cooler than average over the interior of the state. Moderate to fresh southwest to southeasterly winds, fresh and gusty over southern parts. Light and variable winds in the far north.Saturday 1 OctoberA weak high will drift eastwards over the south of the state, leading to fine and sunny conditions. Relatively moist and unstable airmass will be in place over the the northern tropics, with a slight to medium chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms.Sunday 2 OctoberThe next upper trough will approach the southwest of the state, with showers and patchy rain with isolated thunderstorms expected over southwestern Queensland. Showers are possible about the east coast in the onshore wind flow. Fine and partly cloudy in the southeast. Slight chance of showers elsewhere, with storms possible about the western Peninsula.Monday 3 OctoberThe upper trough will push through southern Queensland throughout the day, and reach the eastern parts of the state late in the day. Showers and patchy rain with isolated thunderstorms are expected over most of the state, especially in a band from the northwest to the southeast interior. Showers are possible about the east coast and the far north in the onshore wind flow.Tuesday until ThursdayThe upper trough will push off the southern Queensland coast on Tuesday morning, but extend back towards the tropical north. A relatively stable pattern will likely become established over most of the state in its wake. A ridge of high pressure will become slow moving over Queensland, with showers extending along the northern and central coastal areas in the onshore flow. Afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms are expected to develop each day over the tropical interior.
