MELBOURNE - Sep 28/16 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A weak ridge of high pressure extends through eastern Queensland. An upper trough and thickening cloud band lies over western Queensland and will shift eastwards tonight and through Thursday. A cold front associated with the upper trough will also move rapidly eastwards through inland Queensland on Thursday, reaching the Coral Sea late Thursday and Friday morning. Forecast for the rest of WednesdayA medium to high chance of showers and rain areas over the southwest of the state. A slight to medium chance of showers over the remainder of the west and central interior of the state. The chance of a gusty thunderstorm over southwest Queensland. Fine and partly cloudy elsewhere. Light to moderate east to northeast winds over the tropics and southeast, tending moderate to fresh north to northwesterly over the southwest.Thursday 29 SeptemberA high to very high chance of showers and rain areas with possible gusty thunderstorms over the south of the state, clearing from the west in the morning. A medium to high chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere, though fine and partly cloudy over the northern Peninsula. Moderate to fresh southwest to northwesterly winds over the interior. Mostly moderate northeast to northwesterly winds in the east, tending fresh to strong later in the southeast.Friday 30 SeptemberThe upper trough is expected to clear the east coast early morning with early shower activity clearing off the coast south of Ingham, and fine and cooler conditions developing for most of the state. However, the trough will linger about the North Tropical Coast and Peninsula with a medium to high chance of showers and possible thunderstorms. Fresh and gusty westerly winds in the south will make daytime temperatures feel very cool for the time of year.Saturday 1 OctoberA weak high will remain in place over the south of the state, leading to fine and sunny conditions. Relatively moist and unstable airmass will be in place over the the northern tropics, with a slight to medium chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms.Sunday 2 OctoberThe next upper trough will approach the southwest of the state, with showers and patchy rain with isolated thunderstorms expected over southwestern Queensland. Showers are possible about the east coast in the onshore wind flow. Fine and partly cloudy in the southeast. Slight chance of showers elsewhere, with storms possible about the western Peninsula.Monday until WednesdayThe upper trough will push through southern Queensland on Monday and Tuesday, with showers, patchy rain and thunderstorms pushing eastwards over southern and central Queensland, clearing off the southern coast during Tuesday. A slight to medium chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms about the northern tropics through the outlook period with instability being maintained.
