Lentil Harvest in Final Stages

PANAMA - Sep 25/16 - SNS -- Canada's lentil harvest has entered its final stages, with growers hoping for clear skies and warm days to finish taking in the crop.

Saskatchewan Agriculture reports more than 85% of the crop is now in the bin, representing roughly 2.77 million metric tons (MT) of product, compared to 2.03 million MT at this time last year and the recent five-year average of 1.75 million.

Quality remains a worry, though stocks of lentils in terminal elevators in Thunder Bay and Vancouver are mainly No 2 Canada or better. This is not surprising given that red lentils constitute the largest share of the bulk export market and the quality is higher on average than for greens.
