Brazil Cuts Crop, Import Forecast

PANAMA - Sep 22/16 - SNS -- Brazil reduced both the estimated size of this season's dry edible bean harvest and forecast imports in the latest situational update from the Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (CONAB).

The combined harvest the country's three crops is now forecast at 2.516 million metric tons (MT), down from the previous forecast of 2.952 million. Last year's crop was 3.21 million MT and the previous year's 3.454 million MT.

CONAB expects both the total area sown to dry edible beans and average yields to be down over last season. However, it is important to note that the country has three crops, with the first being the most important. It has not yet been harvested. It remains possible that if domestic markets are strong, land in the next two crops could increase, resulting in more beans being grown than currently expected.
